Weather & Emergency Weather Alert App And Website Recommendations

By: Leonard Lenny Vasbinder
June 25, 2020, New Orleans, LA

Over the years, I've used many different weather apps on my phone and different websites on my computer.

Recently, I've been considering a weather radio but started checking out a few of the available FREE apps on the Play Store for my Android phone.

After trying a few and having to wait for actual bad weather -- fortunately, there have been three days of all-day bad weather and thunderstorms the past few days -- but so far, I like the "Tornado" app from the American Red Cross. Reading the reviews from other users show there are some things that could use some tweaking like having the piercing alert come on even if you have your phone set to vibrate or silent mode. I rarely do that so it worked fine for me.

You can set it to follow your location settings or just set it to a particular city. Then you can expand the warning circumference for that city and whenever there is an alert for bad weather or a tornado, a rather loud, almost piercing sound blasts from your phone.

You can read more about the Tornado App here -- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cube.arc.tfa&hl=en_US

My "go-to" weather websites and apps are Weather Underground -- www.wunderground.com and MeteoBlue -- www.meteoblue.com.  One of the different but very good features of MeteoBlue is that it gives you the forecast but then also gives their probability percentages for each day of the forecast. They call it "Predictability" which is the Yellow row.

In other words, as shown in the below screen snip, they have tomorrow's forecast as a 20% chance of rain and they'll have that as 75% Predictability rating and today's forecast is a 65% chance of rain with a 55% Predictability rating -- so they're giving you their forecast based on their interpretation of the available data but they are giving you their Predictability assessment as to how accurate they think they are with that day's forecast.

As far as Weather Underground, their website's 10-day forecast gives you good information at a glance but there is no Predictability feature so you have to presume they are 100% confident in their forecast (Subscribe and follow this blog and my "News" blog LennysNewsAndViews.blogspot.com  for an upcoming article showing how inaccurate most 10-day forecasts really are). There are also tabs for other forecasts and for the WunderMap which is a very good live radar map with customizable features for the data you want to be displayed.

#Coronapocalypse Daily Update - June 24, 2020

#Coronapocalypse Daily Thread, June 24, 2020
Just because people test positive for Covid-19 does NOT mean they are getting sick. Over 80% of positive cases are very mild to completely asymptomatic. 15% have mild to moderate symptoms. 5% are hospitalized.
The average age of deaths is 72. 92% of deaths are people over 55 and 85% are over 65. Upwards of 60% were people in nursing homes, senior care facilities, and hospitals, with preexisting health issues.
The overwhelming majority of people without health issues have had extremely low numbers of even testing positive or getting sick.
The death rate is barely 5% of the original projection.
In other words, it has been severely overhyped and fearmongered -- and it's pathetic how so many otherwise intelligent people are acting like complete dumbasses over this.
I almost forgot -- 2.8 million people die every year in the U.S. That's 7,671 deaths a day without Covid-19. Covid-19 may actually lower the death rate this year, especially in the under 65 age brackets.

Mr. Gorbachev, Tear Down This Wall!:
Rhetorical analysis of President Ronald Reagan’s speech at the Brandenburg Gate
I turned 18 while Jimmy Carter was President. America was in a serious decline, later to be officially classified as a recession. It was the worst period in American history since The Great Depression. There were double-digit unemployment rates, double-digit interest rates, and double-digit inflation. There was the Iran hostage crisis and other strife in the Middle East which led to an OPEC-driven gasoline shortage.  These things resulted in miles-long lines to purchase just five gallons of gas at a time.  Things were so bad that the media regularly reported on “The Misery Index” during Carter’s presidency. Thus, I registered and voted for the Republican Ronald Reagan, the Great Communicator, as the next president and never looked back. In addition to winning the presidency of the United States by a landslide in 1980, Reagan had also served as Governor of California for two terms. He also won reelection by an even larger landslide in 1984, after having a very successful first term. The Cold War, the political and military state of mind that existed after World War II, was at its height during Reagan’s two terms. Reagan’s build-up of our military forces and military technology led the Soviet Union towards a financial crisis since the financial resources of their communist economy could not keep up with America’s capitalist economy. Reagan regularly stood up to the ever-expanding Soviet Empire, which gave him a lot of credibility as the leader of the Free World.
By gaining the world’s confidence and trust as a political leader, appealing to facts, logic, and especially the emotions of both the East and West German people and the Free World, Reagan delivered one of the greatest speeches of all time.
It is 1987, three years removed from a landslide reelection, Reagan stands at the Brandenburg Gate. Reagan is primarily addressing the people of West Berlin but the speech is also being broadcasted live around the world through all the news networks.  The organizers also set up large speakers on pedestals aimed over the Berlin Wall so that the people of East Berlin could also hear the speech. “To those listening in East Berlin, a special word:  Although I cannot be with you, I address my remarks to you just as surely as to those standing here before me.  For I join you, as I join your fellow countrymen in the West, in this firm, this unalterable belief:  Es Gibt nu rein Berlin [There is only one Berlin]” (Reagan).  Reagan established his purpose and duty, declaring that he and America were friends to the oppressed people of East Germany and the rest of the Soviet Union.  He tugged at their emotions and further persuaded them with logic, credibility, and powerful rhetoric. By using their language, Reagan made a deeper connection to the people of East and West Germany. This quote uses a sharp, slicing, yet sincere tone. In addition, Reagan, and the world’s agreement with him intimidated Soviet Union General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev to cringe and cower to the deepest corners of his office.  President Reagan’s use of such rhetoric even persuaded the apathetic and oftentimes ignorant people of East Germany, and the apathetic people of West Germany, America, and the world to believe in and support him.
To further connect with the peoples of East and West Germany, Reagan again uses pathos by saying, “We come to Berlin, we American Presidents, because it's our duty to speak in this place of freedom… more than 500 years older than our own nation… Perhaps the composer, Paul Linke, understood something about American Presidents. You see, like so many Presidents before me, I come here today because wherever I go, whatever I do: “Ich hab Noch Einen Koffer in Berlin” [I still have a suitcase in Berlin.] Again, Reagan uses their language, continuing his efforts to further connect with the peoples of East and West Germany. He even references the title line from an old song, “I still have a suitcase in Berlin” (Ich hab' Noch Einen Koffer in Berlin), one of the most famous songs about Berlin.
President Reagan utilizes pathos and imagery when he says, “In this season of spring in 1945, the people of Berlin emerged from their air-raid shelters to find devastation. Thousands of miles away, the people of the United States reached out to help… Where four decades ago there was rubble, today in West Berlin there is the greatest industrial output of any city in Germany.” Referencing this historical moment following World War II, he alludes that America and the American people are here to help again.  It is 40 years later to the month that the Marshall Plan was created and used to rebuild Germany and Reagan is implying that America will help to rebuild Germany again—that is to rebuild the political and physical boundaries that separate East and West Germany.
President Reagan made a very bold declaration aimed at Gorbachev and the Soviet Union.  “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev – Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” (Reagan). The crowd erupted jubilantly. Reagan uses parallelism to create a rhythmic flow to his speech. This bold statement and the entire speech and movement ultimately led to the collapse of the Berlin wall and the Soviet empire.  The communist-controlled East Germany built the wall in 1961 and the wall separated Berlin into East Berlin and West Berlin, with East Berlin and East Germany being communist-controlled and West Berlin and West Germany being controlled by a democratic government.
Reagan’s tone, use of imagery, and metaphors persuade his listeners in Germany and around the world to keep the freedom and unity movement going forward. The speech was highly successful and furthered the movement of a reunited Berlin and Germany.
The speech worked as planned.

You Know You're From New Orleans When

This is for my Louisiana friends (taken from a friend's Facebook post, who probably took it from someone else).
Your last name isn't pronounced the way it's spelled. (This is a personal one - it's always pronounced Le-BLANK.)
No matter where else you go in the world, you are always disappointed with the food.
You get up in the morning and start cooking a pot of rice before you give any thought to what you'll fix for dinner.
Your baby's first words are "long beads."
You ask, "How dey running?" and "Are dey fat?" but you're inquiring about seafood quality.
When a hurricane is imminent, you have a lot more faith in Nash Roberts than Super Doppler 6000.
Nothing shocks you, period, ever. Not politics, hurricanes, red lights, parking tickets, the Saints, Mardi Gras.
Your "one martini lunch" becomes a "five Bloody Mary afternoon" and you keep your job.
You're walking with a plastic cup of beer. When it starts to rain, you cover your beer instead of your head.
Your idea of health food is a baked potato instead of fries with your fried seafood platter.
You call tomato sauce "red gravy."
You know you recycled too much newspaper when there isn't enough for the dinner (or crawfish) table.
Your house payment is less than your air conditioning bill.
You push little old ladies out of the way to catch Mardi Gras throws.
You know it's "ask" but you purposely say "ax."
You understand it when someone describes their favorite color as K & B purple.
Someone asks you, "Where you at?" and you tell them how you are.
You are left behind at an out-of-town bar searching for a "go cup."
You think of potholes as naturally occurring speed bumps.
Your grandparents are called "Maw Maw" and "Paw Paw."
You cringe every time you hear an actor with a Southern or Cajun accent in a "New Orleans-based" movie or TV show.
You have to reset your clocks after every thunderstorm.
You waste more time navigating back streets than you would if you just sat in traffic.
You fall asleep to the soothing sounds of four box fans.
You eat dinner out and spend the entire meal talking about all the other good places you've eaten.
Every so often, you have waterfront property.
Everyone you know has either hit an armadillo or nutria with their car or truck.
The crawdad mounds in your front yard have overtaken the grass.
The four festival seasons in your year are Crawfish, Shrimp, Crab, and King Cake.
The smell of a crawfish or shrimp boil turns you on more than does the Movie Channel or HBO.
The waitress at your local sandwich shop tells you a fried oyster po-boy' dressed' is healthier than a Caesar salad.
When giving directions you use words like 'uptown', 'downtown', 'backatown', 'riverside', 'lakeside', 'other side of the bayou', 'up the bayou', 'down the bayou', or 'other side of the levee'.
When you refer to a geographical location 'way up North', you are referring to places like Shreveport, Little Rock or Memphis, 'where it gets real cold'.
You 'wrench' your hands in the sink with an onion bar to get the crawfish smell off.
You assume everyone has mosquito swarms in their backyard.
You believe that purple, green and gold look good together (and you will even eat things those colors).
You can pronounce Tchoupitoulas but can't spell it. (also, Thibodeaux, Opelousas, Pontchartrain, Ouachita, and Atchafalaya)
You don't learn until high school that Mardi Gras is not a national holiday.
You don't realize until high school what a 'county' is.
You don't worry when you see ships riding higher in the river than the top of your house.
You go by 'ya-mom'n'ems' on Good Friday for family supper.
You go to buy a new winter coat ( what most people refer to as windbreakers) and throw your arms up in the air to make sure it allows enough room to catch Mardi Gras beads.
You greet people with 'Howzyamomma'an'dem?' and hear back 'Dey fine'!"
You have spent a lazy summer afternoon on the Lake Pontchartrain seawall catching blue crabs.
You judge a po-boy by the number of napkins used.
You know the definition of 'dressed'. (As in "I want my po' boy dressed.")
You know those big roaches can fly, but you're able to sleep at night anyway.
You know what a nutria rat is but you still pick it to represent your baseball team.
You like your rice and politics dirty.
You prefer skiing in the bayou.
You pronounce the largest city in the state as "N'awlins."
You realize the rain forest is less humid than Louisiana.
You've ever had Community Coffee.
Your burial plot is six feet "above the ground" rather than six feet "below the ground."
You've ever worn shorts at Christmas time.
You pronounce Lafayette as "Laffy-ette", not "La-fy-ette".
You learned to drive a boat before you could drive a car.
You know the meaning of a "Cocodrie Reeboks". (a pair of white fishing boots)
You offer somebody a "coke" and then ask them what kind: Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, 7Up?
You can name all of your 3rd cousins.
You plan your wedding around hunting season & LSU football.
You have a ditch on at least one side of your property.
You can list all the ingredients of gumbo or jambalaya.
If you ever had to wait for the bridge to "come down" so you can get home.
If you've ever been to a wedding and someone either danced in a #3 washtub or with a broom and this was considered normal.
You "make your groceries" or "save your dishes" or have an "icebox".
You mow your lawn with a "mowin' machine."
You can't think of anybody that can cook better than your momma.
You know when it's appropriate to use "Tony Chachere's".
You know an old person that can "treat" you for warts.

Hey Shithead,

What are you, some kind of sadist? Now there are nine Pipers Piping! And Christ do they play! They haven't stopped chasing those maids since they got here. The cows are getting upset and they're stepping all over those screeching birds. What am I going to do? The neighbors have started a petition to evict me!

You Rotten Prick!

Now there's Ten Ladies Dancing. I don't know why I call those sluts ladies. They've been balling those pipers all night long. The cows can't sleep and they've got diarrhea. My living room is a river of shit. The commissioner of buildings has subpoenaed me to give cause why the building shouldn't be condemned. I'm siccing the police on you.

Listen, Fuckhead!

What's with the Eleven Lords a Leaping on those Maids and Ladies? Some of those broads will never walk again. Those pipers ran through the maids and have been committing sodomy with the cows! All 23 birds are dead, they've been trampled to death in the orgy. I hope you're satisfied, you vicious, rotten swine.

Your sworn enemy,

Agnes

The "New Minority" That I Wrote About In 2005 Has Finally Happened

According to this news report, Congress has raised the National Tobacco Age to 21.  https://www.foxnews.com/politics/congress-raises-national-tobacco-age-to-21-spending-package

I wrote the below 2005 post on my Yahoo GeoCities website before they were called blogs (short for Weblogs).  While that platform no longer exists, the Internet Wayback Machine at Archive.org saved a copy, as the IWM does for almost every webpage on the internet. I did go through and edit some of the grammar issues now that I have been back in college a few years and know a LOT more about writing than I did back then.

“THE NEW MINOR(ITY). ANOTHER RIDICULOUS PROPOSAL -- OR NOT?”

Re:  If so many "other adults" want to discriminate against 18, 19 and 20-year-old adults, then those "other adults" should VOTE to raise the "age of majority" (adulthood) back up to 21 years of age.

[Edit - Info added -- Many people living today do not remember or ever knew that the age of majority and the voting age in the U.S. was 21 up until 1971 when the 26th Amendment to the Constitution lowered the voting age from 21 down to 18.  More reading about this topic here -- http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2016/08/age-become-adult/]

Several things that will change or should be changed for "The New Minor(ity)":

1.  The new "minors" will no longer be able to VOTE, join the military, sign the selective service card, get married, sign contracts or perform any other legal matter reserved for adults.  Further, the new "minors" should not be allowed to become a legal guardian (parent) to a baby.  If a new "minor" has, or fathers a baby, then one of each of the "minors" parents or guardians have to sign legal guardianship papers and agree to raise and support the "minors" and their baby until the "minors" reach the age of 21.  One adult parent of the "minor mom" and "minor dad" must sign as legal guardians, making sure the rest of the taxpayers are not forced to pay for the acts of these new "minors".  (Actually, this concept should be instituted today, even if the age of majority is not raised back up to 21.)

2.  The new "minors" will be treated as juveniles for all criminal acts as long as they are "minors" (i.e.- Slapped on the wrist for most crimes.)  Except, I propose creating a "three strikes and you’re out" and "nine innings" program where a new "minor" offender convicted "three times" or arrested "nine times" would be treated like an adult on all subsequent arrests and convictions.  (This too would make sense today, even if the age of majority were not raised.)

3.  The new "minors" should not be taxed in any way, shape or form since our country was founded to prevent "taxation without representation".  Since I don't see where any of the politicians represent the new "minors" and the new "minors" would not be allowed to VOTE, they should be tax-exempt for all income earned and purchases made.  (This should be made part of the tax code today.)  (But we know that our "tax and spend" politicians are not going to exempt this large group of "minor" taxpayers, even though these same politicians have no problem passing age-specific laws and prohibitions against this same group of "minor" taxpayers.)

4.  The new "minors" will be tax-deductible to parents for a few more years.  Since the new "minors" will not be legally responsible for their actions until they reach the age of 21, their parents will be held responsible for any accidents, civil and criminal actions, debts, education, auto and health insurance, etc.  Further, their parents will not be able to treat their new "minor" (18, 19 and 20-year-old) children as adults either.

5.  The new "minors" will not be able to control their own bank accounts or credit cards and would, therefore, require their parents to co-sign for everything the "minors" do.  Further, the parents would have to accompany them on trips to the mall, stores, etc. to sign checks and credit card vouchers.  This would affect all retail sales, car sales, etc. and would put additional strains on the leisure time of the American family.

6.  Of course, the new "minors" will not be able to smoke, drink, gamble or buy a handgun, BUT HECK; they can’t do those things now.  (Or at least not in the very near future with the way things are going.)

Obvious the above proposals are ridiculous.  I think that all "18, 19 and 20-year-old adults" should have the same rights and privileges as any "other adult".  Because of spineless politicians, special interest groups and the "other adults" (who sit quietly by and watch as this age discrimination takes place), many of the rights and privileges are being stripped, or have been stripped, from the new "minor(ity)".

I propose reversing this trend and giving back all of the adult rights and privileges to 18, 19 and 20-year-olds and getting rid of this new "minor(ity)".  Or we should VOTE to change the age of majority back to 21 years of age and strip anyone under 21 of all rights and privileges, granted to adults, and the responsibility that comes with those rights and privileges.

NOTICE:

ALL OF YOU SPINELESS POLITICIANS AND SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS (i.e.-M. A. D. D., etc.) CAN NOW TELL ALL THE "OTHER ADULTS" TO STAND UP, FOR A FEW MORE YEARS, AND RAISE THEIR NEW "MINOR" CHILDREN AND THE BABIES THAT COME WITH THEM.  FURTHER, YOU CAN TELL THE "OTHER ADULTS" TO PAY THE INCREASES ON THE FAMILY AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE POLICY THAT WILL INEVITABLY HAPPEN WHEN ALL OF THESE NEW "MINORS" ARE ADDED BACK TO THE FAMILY POLICY.  THE "OTHER ADULTS" WILL HAVE TO HELP WITH THE SHOPPING AND GO TO TRAFFIC COURT AND JUVENILE COURT WITH THEIR NEW "MINOR" CHILDREN.  THE "OTHER ADULTS" WILL ALSO BE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR NEW "MINOR" CHILDREN UNTIL THEY REACH THE AGE OF 21, INSTEAD OF THE CURRENT AGE OF 18.

ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO RAISE THE AGE OF MAJORITY BACK TO 21?

Sarcastically yours... or not?

Lenny Vasbinder
